Music is for sharing + Neil Diablo

Here’s a lovely Balearic style recorded selection by Manchesters Neil Diablo. I made my own cover art here with a photograph from Carl Kleiner - an incredibly talented swedish photographer I’ve previously posted about.

LA MAISON HINMAN

I took this series of photographs at my dear friends TC Meggs, Jan and Charles Hinman’s home in lower east side New York. My friendship with TC is how I was invited to stay at their home initially. He’s been living with them for about 4 years now. The Hinman’s whoever, have been residing on the Bowery since 1971.

I met Thomas about 5 years back through many mutual close friends. He used to come to Montreal a lot to get away from NYC and always crashes at our place when he does. I’d describe him as a computer wizard/hopeless romantic. A good looking fellow with very good manners. Too generous for his own good at times and extremely adventurous. The perfect man friend really. He lives in a  sectioned off zone in Charles (or Chuck for friends) studio.

The pictures above only show a small portion of their 8000 square foot living space, and highlights Jan’s decorative style. She’s a physicist, and once told me about a theory which scientifically explains crop circles. She doesn’t like the smell of cooking garlic much and has a great collection of colourful Le Creuset pots in the kitchen.

Her husband Charles Hinman is part of the league of new American abstractionists stemming from the bustling New York art scene of the 1960′s post Pollock era. I snuck one of his paintings in the last shot to give an idea of what he does. The entire place is like a gallery of his work spanning over four decades. He still teaches a few times a week and works on new pieces constantly – often waking me up with his electric wood saw whenever I’m around… but that’s what happens when you stay up all night reading through their gigantic collection of art books and magazines.

In any case, because of my frequent stays over the last few years my friendship and fondness for these 3 people and the house they live in has grown bigger than words can describe. I always look forward to my time spent in this home and I’m delighted to show you a glimpse of a place which deeply inspires me.

Welcome to the Hinmans.

Mens f/w12 Common Projects

The ‘Original Achilles Mid’ in Tan

The ‘Original Achilles Low’ in Black

The ‘Wool Achilles’ in Burgundy

For our first season with this New York based label I booked their two most classic and recognizable styles (the Achilles low and Achilles mid) along with this seasons specked wool Achilles low in burgundy.

Since it’s launch in 2006 CP shoes have been produced in Italy using a rich and durable Nappa leather, a fully leather lined interior, a stitch reinforced vulcanized rubber cup sole, and a very fitted last. These manufacturing distinctions make it heavier and much more durable than your average trainers.

Recognizable by a gold fleck serial number printed on the outside of the shoe – which aptly referes to its production Sku, colourway and size – the COMMON PROJECTS branding is on pare with it’s minimalist shoe design sensibilities. What I like about the Achilles is that it sits in a category of it’s own… somewhere between a dressy trainer and a casual dress shoe.

The creators had the simple objective of fabricating a luxury sneaker derived from a 1960′s tennis shoe. Little did they know, this design would set a new standard within the industry. Stripping the shoe of ornamental details and proposing flawless silhouettes made with high quality materials, it’s no wonder we’ve seen countless other brands follow in their footsteps…

Inspiration Folder + Bruce Weber

Filmed and directed by fashion photographer Bruce Weber “Let’s get lost” is a fascinating documentary about the life of famed jazz singer and trumeter Chet Baker.

Juxtaposing Bakers earlier years as a handsome young jazz prodigy of the 1950′s to his later ones as musical legend and junkie, this 1988 release captures the unique experience of looking at a musical genius through the eyes of a photographic icon.

Weber’s photography portfolio includes Editorials for Vogue, Vanity fair, W magazine, GQ, Arena Homme+. And add campaigns for Versace, Calvin Klein, Chanel homme, Moncler,  A.P.C, Ralph Lauren, and Saks Fifth Avenue amongst many many others.

The first 5 minutes of this documentary set the tone perfectly and are entirely indicative of what you can expect the voyage to be. These first few scenes should be enough to persuade you into setting aside 2 hours of your time to watch such a rare masterpiece.
